Themba Zwane will equal my long-standing PSL record – Teko Modise

Bafana Bafana legend Teko Modise believes Mamelodi Sundowns star Themba Zwane will go on to join him in the PSL’s record books.

Teko Modise is the only player to have won the PSL Player of the Season award twice after coming out triumphant in 2007/08 and 2008/09 while Themba Zwane’s blistering start to the current campaign puts him as a firm favourite to defend his crown as the league’s best.

Themba Zwane followed up on his 2019/20 heroics by scoring seven goals in the opening seven games of the 2020/2021 PSL campaign while assisting one further goal. He has been critical to Mamelodi Sundowns impressive start to the season making them early favourite to defend their title.

Teko Modise backs Mamelodi Sundowns’ Themba Zwane to defend crown

“The way Themba Zwane has performed so far, I think he is capable of that defending his Footballer of the Season crown.” Former Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City star Teko Modise told Kick-Off.

“His game has grown so much, he doesn’t only provide assists, he also bangs in goals, and he’s very, very influential. To carry a team like Mamelodi Sundowns is a big, big thing knowing that there are so many superstars that are there, those are great signs. So, for me, if there’s one person that I think can actually break that record, it’s Themba Zwane. What worked for me is that it was never my ambition to get it for the second time.”

“What’s important is getting goals. I just hope that Themba Zwane doesn’t get any injuries this season, if they just manage his games very well, because he has played so many games in the last few years.” added Modise.

Themba Zwane will next be looking to add to his seven goals when Mamelodi Sundowns face Golden Arrows on Saturday night at the Sugar Ray Xulu stadium.
