And the good news for all AmaZulu fans is that McCarthy boasts a winning record against his old mentor!
Even better news for the Team of Choice faithful is that their team is playing some decent football, while Amakhosi, er, not so much.
According to Mzansi Football, it will be the first time the two will face each other in their new colours after both changed jobs in recent months.
Hunt took over at Kaizer Chiefs after Bidvest Wits folded at the end of last season, while McCarthy returned to coaching last month to take over at AmaZulu.
GAVIN HUNT COACHED BENNI MCCARTHY AT SEVEN STARS
Benni McCarthy was a fresh-faced 17-year-old when Gavin Hunt first coached him at Cape Town club Seven Stars, but they didn’t work together again as McCarthy went off to forge a successful career overseas.
They first faced each other as rival coaches just over three years ago now.
Benni McCarthy made his coaching debut against Gavin Hunt for Cape Town City and won 1-0 away over Bidvest Wits in the first match of the new league season in August 2017.
That was quickly followed by home and away wins in the MTN8 semi-finals as McCarthy got one over Hunt on two more occasions in quick succession and took Cape Town City to the knockout final.
Then, in the first round of the Nedbank Cup in February 2018, McCarthy won again on the road in Johannesburg to take a ‘4-0’ lead over Hunt before losing in the league at home a few weeks later.
In the 2018/19 season, the Citizens lost at home to Wits in the league, but gained revenge away from home.
MCCARTHY HOLDS A 5-2 LEAD OVER HUNT
Benni McCarthy left Cape Town City in October 2019 before playing Wits last season, so the tally currently reads 5-2 in favour of McCarthy over Hunt.
AmaZulu are currently ninth in the DStv Premiership standings with 10 points after nine matches.
Kaizer Chiefs find themselves in a lowly 14th-place, with a mere seven points from nine matches.
Kick-off at Kings Park on Wednesday is at 15:00 SA time.
