But who are the other nine South Africans with at least 4 000 Test runs to their names?

Some are obvious, a couple perhaps not …

Leading the way – by some distance – is former all-rounder Jacques Kallis who in 165 Tests scored 13 206 runs.

In second place is Hashim Amla who plundered 9 282 runs in his 124 Tests.

Close behind the ‘Mighty #’ comes Graeme Smith with 9 253 runs in 116 Tests.

Fourth place belongs to AB de Villiers who scored 8 765 runs before calling it a day in Test cricket after 114 Tests.

Former Proteas opener and coach Gary Kirsten finds himself in fifth place with 7 289 runs in 101 Tests.

Herschelle Gibbs is next best in sixth place with 6 167 runs – the vast majority of which were scored in exhilarating fashion – in his 90 Tests.

Current Proteas coach Mark Boucher follows with the 5 498 runs he contributed along with being a top-class wicketkeeper in 146 Tests.

Darryl Cullinan finds himself in eighth place with 4 554 runs at an average of 44.21 in the 70 Tests he played.

Dean Elgar is actually in ninth place in terms of runs scored, having overtaken Faf du Plessis who reached the 4 000-Test run mark in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Centurion last weekend.

Du Plessis is on 4 108 Test runs having been dismissed for eight in the Proteas’ first innings at the Wanderers.
