The draw for the 2020/2021 Nedbank Cup took place this evening with a number of scintillating round of 32 matches coming up.
The Nedbank Cup is this season’s second and final cup competition following the abrupt halt of the Telkom Knockout which usually acts as the second annual cup competition on the PSL calendar.
There will be no amateur teams in this season’s Nedbank Cup due to the lengthy suspension of amateur football in the country by SAFA as a result of COVID-19.
The Nedbank Cup usually features eight teams from the lower leagues, eight teams from the GladAfrica Championship and 16 top flight teams however this season will see 16 teams from both the GladAfrica Championship and DStv Premiership compete for the trophy.
No amateur teams in 2020/2021 Nedbank Cup
“The South African Football Association have apologized to the PSL and indicated that the association will not be able to provide eight teams to participate in this season’s Nedbank Cup due to the fact that non-professional football is not continuing due to Covid-19. SAFA has wished the PSL “good luck” for the competition.” a SAFA statement read.
“The PSL has discussed the matter with Nedbank and agreed that the only appropriate way to deal with the matter is to restore the eight GladAfrica championship teams recently knocked out in the qualification competition to the Nedbank Cup.
“The 2020/21 Nedbank Cup will consequently proceed with 32 teams, being 16 DStv Premiership teams and 16 Glad Africa championship teams. All of these participating teams will be a part of this evening’s draw.”
