Kaizer Chiefs leave Khune out of squad for Caf Champions League crunch

Kaizer Chiefs have named their squad for their CAF Champions League First Round second-leg clash against Angolan outfit Primeiro De Agosto.

The Glamour Boys have secured a chartered flight to Angola to take part in the tie despite the strengthening of COVID-19 restrictions in the wake of the onset of a second wave in South Africa.

Kaizer Chiefs will take just two goalkeepers along for the trip with Bruce Bvuma and Daniel Akpeyi named in the squad ahead of Itumeleng Khune.

Khune was on the bench for the first leg match which ended in a goalless draw as Akpeyi kept a clean sheet.

Nurkovic gives Kaizer Chiefs a Champions League boost

There is good news for Kaizer Chiefs fans hoping for the return of Samir Nurkovic as he was named in Gavin Hunt’s travelling group that will jet to Angola this week.

Nurkovic has been absent since sustaining an injury in the bio-bubble at the tail-end of last season.

“Amakhosi travel to Angola with a squad of 18 players lead by head coach Gavin Hunt who will be assisted by Dillon Sheppard.

“There is also good news as Chiefs leading striker from the 2019-20 campaign, Samir Nurković, who missed the start of the current season through injury, is part of the Chiefs travelling contingent and in all likelihood will make his first appearance of the 2020-21 season during the game in Angola,” the club announced on their website.

A concern that may just rear its head, is that Kaizer Chiefs are taking a relatively small squad to Angola and could be caught short by injury or illness.

Kaizer Chiefs will be keen to avoid a repeat of their last entry into the Caf Champions League when they failed to make the group stage after being eliminated in the First Round by Ivorian team Asec Mimosas.

Hunt’s side scraped through the preliminary round with a 1-0 aggregate win over Cameroon’s PWD Bamenda.

Kaizer Chiefs match in Angola will be their first since their goalless draw in the first leg on 23 December 2020. They come into the match winless in their last five contests.
