Proteas’ Wiaan Mulder to turn out as overseas pro for Leicestershire

Proteas and Lions allrounder Wiaan Mulder has signed on to play for Leicestershire as an overseas player in the 2021 County Championship and Royal London One-Day Cup.

Mulder’s promising career has been hampered by injury but he was impressive during the Proteas 2-0 series win over Sri Lanka at the turn of the year and has all the qualities to enjoy a successful run on the County Cricket scene.

The spell with the Leicestershire will be his second stint as an overseas professional having enjoyed a spell with Kent during the 2019 English summer.

Mulder has been earmarked for big things for some time and Leicestershire have admitted that he has been on their radar for some time.

“Wiaan is a top-class allrounder who we have kept an eye on for several months,” Leicestershire head coach, Paul Nixon, said. “He has recently returned to the international scene and we are delighted to have Wiaan sign for us.

“Wiaan is a player who is comfortable batting in the top six and is a first-change bowler at the very highest level. He is highly experienced for a young player and will add a huge amount to our group.

“I have spoken to many people about Wiaan and everybody has good things to say about how he goes about his work. Wiaan is a match-winner who is very rarely out of the game with his all-round abilities.”

Mulder already has five first-class hundreds to his name to go with 99 wickets in the format and is on track to become an international allrounder of some repute.

Mulder ended with figures of 5 for 108 and 36 runs from the Boxing Day test and finished with the analysis of 4 for 77 from the second fixture, ensuring his test bowling average is below 20.

The Lions prospect sports first-class statistics that tell the story of a promising youngster with both bat and ball, averaging an impressive 39.44 with the bat with a highest score of 146. He also recently scored 100 and 91* in a first-class game for Lions against Warriors.
