RIP | Former SA Olympian and 800m record holder dies of Covid-19

Former South African 800m record holder Marius van Heerden has died after contracting Covid-19.

He was 46.

According to Netwerk24, Van Heerden fell ill a week ago and died in a Cape Town hospital on Friday.

Van Heerden set the SA 800m record at the Green Point Stadium in 1996, running a time of 1:44:57.

Later that year he represented South Africa at the Atlanta Olympics, but was unable to progress out of the heats after posting a time of 1:47:46.

The current South African 800m record of 1:42:69 was set in 1999 by Hezekiel Sepeng.

Van Heerden is survived by his wife, Petra, and his two sons, Tiaan and Hugo.

The South African sends its condolences to family and friends of Marius van Heerden.
