Just in: Chad disqualified from the African Cup of Nations qualifying

Chad disqualified from afcon 2022

Chad has just been disqualified from the African Cup of Nations qualifying on Monday on the ground that the country’s government dissolved the soccer federation.

The Confederation of African Football said it had ordered Chad to forfeit the two games that were scheduled to hold this week as 3-0 losses.

Chad was to host Namibia and Mali on Wednesday and Sunday respectively. And the team was already out of contention to qualify for the tournament in Cameroon next January and February.

The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) decision is one of the first taken under the new leadership. General secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba left FIFA to run the Cairo-based governing body following the victory of the South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe as the new CAF president on March 12.

Motsepe was elected unopposed as FIFA president Gianni Infantino successfully brokered a deal.

This also means FIFA could now suspend Chad from world soccer as well. FIFA statutes allow for member federations to be suspended when governments are believed to have interfered in the independence of elected soccer officials.
