Pieter Van Dalen

Nickname: 'Jabulani'

Member of Parliament RSA., Parliament of RSA

Currently resides in: Western Cape, South Africa

Born in Bellville South Africa

.After a successful career in the business world as Managing Director of his own electronics company for 17 years, and following nearly two decades of serving the community as a dedicated Fire Brigade and SAPS reservist, Pieter decided to turn his indomitable spirit and exceptional management, organisational and people skills, to the political arena.

He began his political career in 2005, successfully standing as a DA candidate for Ward 14 in Kuils River. Through his tireless and dedicated proactive work (physically visiting 7 000 houses), Pieter helped the DA capture this ward from the ANC with a significant majority. Kuils River is currently the fifth largest branch in the Metro.

Between 2006 and 2007, Pieter was elected to posts as; DA Councillor for Ward 14 Kuils River, Whip in Subcouncil 21 Oostenberg, Vice-Chairperson of the Oostenberg South constituency and delegate to the National and Provincial Congresses in Johannesburg and Mossel Bay

In 2007, Pieter created and served as Chairman of the Copper Theft Unit (Copperheads) with a staff of 19 officials and was also elected Chairperson of the Investment Committee of the Cape Municipal Workers' Pension Fund, a post to which he was re-elected in 2008.

Pieter has actively served in a civic capacity striving to improve the community.

He created three ratepayers' associations as well as the highly successful non-profit "Rainbow community organization".

He also personally funded the Happy Valley soup kitchen, and further served as a member of the Civil Oversight Committee for the Cape Town Metro Police from 2006, while he remains a dedicated member of the SAPS - CPF and Sector policing in Kuils River- a commitment he has fulfilled for the six years.

Pieter also serves as a member on several portfolio committees, including those dealing with; Utilities, Rules, Language, Civil Oversight, Coastal Waters Monitoring, the Cable Theft Task Team, Public Enterprises and Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries.

It remains Pieter's passion to deliver meaningful inputs, and to offer support and knowledge using his human relations skills and insight, to motivate others.

He is committed to exposing corruption and wasteful expenditure wherever it rears its ugly head, particularly in state organs, and is a media friendly peoples person.

Pieter is the DA Deputy Shadow Minister of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries.

Probably her fiercest opponent, the Democratic Alliance spokesperson on fisheries, Pieter van Dalen, is a former police detective who believes the minister was on the brink of being fired by President Jacob Zuma.

Government to shift control of patrol vessels

Business Report | 2013

Fisheries department set to be stripped of patrol vessels
DA fisheries spokesman Pieter van Dalen said he had been informed that the government was poised to switch the responsibility for the patrol ships to a department “which is not dogged in controversy”. He pointed out that the ships had been berthed at Simon’s Town for most of the past year.

Police raid Smit Amandla offices over DAFF vessels contract:Public Protector Thuli Mandonsela was asked by Democratic Alliance MP Pieter van Dalen to investigate how Sekunjalo won the contract in November 2011. Madonsela said her report will be released this month.

Business Day | 2012

THE Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries yesterday accused specialist maritime services company Smit Amandla Marine and its own officials of complicity and corruption amounting to R1.6bn-R2bn, but the company has dismissed the claim as outrageous.
This is the latest shot in a long-running fight between Smit Amandla Marine, the department and a consortium led by Sekunjalo Investment Holdings over the awarding of a R800m fisheries protection tender. It involves providing crew and management to seven vessels used for research, fisheries protection and oil-spill control.

Business Day | 2012

THE Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is furious that Democratic Alliance (DA) MP Pieter van Dalen on Thursday made public a confidential report by forensic auditing firm Ernst & Young into the contracts and extensions awarded to Smit Amandla Marine.
The department said in a statement that it had lost confidence in Ernst & Young and would put the investigation on hold as it had been compromised.
The investigation was centred on how Smit Amandla Marine could hold the fishing vessel management contract for a total of 12 years to the value of about R1.6bn.

Independent news | 2013

Cape Town - Investment company Sekunjalo has hit out at DA MP and fisheries spokesman Pieter van Dalen, accusing him of telling “lies” and making “defamatory statements” in the controversy over the management of South Africa’s fisheries research and patrol fleet.

But an unrepentant Van Dalen denies the charges and believes all his comments and claims will be vindicated when a report on an investigation into this issue by Public Protector Thuli Madonsela - that he requested - is released.

Joemat-Pettersson violated Ethics Code - Pieter van Dalen

Corruptionwatch | 2012

Democratic Alliance MP and spokesperson on Fisheries Pieter van Dalen said he was concerned Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson was using the inquiry as a means of halting discussion in the media and parliament around the awarding of multimillion-rand tenders to Sekunjalo and Smit Amandla.
“No minister should be allowed to hide behind an inquiry to avoid asking difficult questions,” he said.
Van Dalen is the person who revealed an internal report by the department that raised questions about the awarding of an R800-million contract to Sekunjalo to police illegal fishing along the South African coast.

Cape Town's plan

The City of Cape Town has set up a task team to respond to reports of copper cable and other metal theft. This team has appointed several investigators and a rapid response unit that is chaired by Councillor Pieter van Dalen. During a conference on Combating Non-Ferrous Metals Theft that was held in Gauteng during November by IQPC, Councillor Van Dalen said that the establishment of this task team came after the City had spent approximately R22 million to replace and repair damage caused by cable theft in one year alone.
