The PSL title beckons for Kaizer Chiefs, who visit a desperate Baroka side at Bidvest Stadium in their final fixture of the season on Saturday.

It’s a must-win clash for both sides, who will be keeping a keen interest in another make-or-break clash between defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Black Leopards.

The Glamour Boys are in pole position to clinch the title, but only just, as they are tied on points with the Tshwane giants, with goal-difference placing them at a slight advantage.

For Bakgakga, survival in the upper echelons of the PSL is the main item on the agenda, as they aim to avoid having to fight it out in the promotion/relegation playoffs taking place during the offseason.

Previous PSL meetings

Looking at their brief history, nothing separates these two sides in their seven meetings across competitions.

No one will ever forget their first-ever meeting when a Baroka – then a third tier outfit – stunned Kaizer Chiefs in a 2011 Nedbank Cup semifinal clash.

In the league, Amakhosi have locked horns with Baroka seven times, with each side registering two wins.

The two sides are also tied in terms of the number of goals scored in the clash at eight apiece.

Team news

Even without one of their star players this season in goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, Chiefs will still have considerable experience between the post in Itumeleng Khune, who has been part of the squad in all but one of their four championships in the PSL era.

A first-team regular for over a decade, the 33-year-old made only his third league start in the midweek clash against Chippa, but managed to keep a clean sheet.

His exploits have drawn praise from ex-teammate Siphiwe Tshabalala.

“That’s when experience comes to the fore… Itu (Itumeleng) may perhaps not have been 100% match fit, but he made a difference thanks to his experience and leadership,” the Chiefs website quoted Tshabalala.
