Man United captain Harry Maguire will not be stripped of the armband, despite recently being convicted of criminal activity.

This is according to Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who expressed his backing for the 27-year-old.

Harry Maguire to remain captain

Maguire was handed a suspended sentence in Greece for aggravated assault, resisting arrest and repeated attempts of bribery. This is after an altercation with police in Mykonos, where he was deemed the main aggressor.

The England defender has maintained his innocence, and has appealed the sentence.

With the controversy surrounding him, questions around him continuing to lead the Reds have sprung up.

According to his boss, Maguire will carry on with donning the armband for the Premier League’s most successful club.

“He is going to be our captain,” Solskjaer told MUTV. “He’s handled it really well and, of course, I’ll be here to support him. “We’ll just leave Harry and his people and the process to run. For me, he is a top, an absolute top human being and has always been a positive guy with the right values. So I really hope we can see Harry performing at his best.”

Clear conscience

Speaking to the BBCin his first interview since the Mykonos incident, Maguire said he had no reason to apologise for his role in the altercation.

“I don’t have anyone to apologise to,” Maguire said. “An apology is something when you have done something wrong,” he said. “Obviously, the situation has made it difficult playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world, so I regret putting the fans and the club through this. But I did nothing wrong.”

Maguire did not feature for England in the Uefa Nations League, but national coach Gareth Southgate has expressed his desire to recall the defender in the next international window.

The player has been granted an opportunity for a re-trial, according to Greek law.

Man United face Aston Villa on Saturday in a warm-up match ahead of their league opener against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday, 19 September.
