Mamelodi Sundowns is set for a squad overhaul, following the club’s success in the 2019/20 season. This is according to coach Pitso Mosimane.
The Brazilians hoisted aloft two trophies in as many weekends, clinching the league title on the final day of the season before adding the Nedbank Cup trophy to their cabinet. This brought their title to three for the season, which made them the first club to claim the domestic treble in South Africa since Orlando Pirates completed the feat twice between 2010 and 2012.
Pitso Mosimane sheds light on Sundowns transfer activity
During the recently-concluded campaign, Sundowns had already begun strengthening their squad for the upcoming season, with the likes of George Maluleka and Grant Margeman signing pre-contracts from Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax Cape Town, respectively.
Speakiing at a virtual trophy parade, Mosimane revealed that a few players in his squad will not don the famous yellow and blue next season.
“I have given a list to the club on players we think should be offloaded,” he said.
“We have acquired about 50%, and I don’t know if this is the right word, of the players we wanted. I have to wait for the team to announce them.
“And we have to offload players. You must understand that we are bringing the younger ones to support the senior players – sometimes it gives the perception that we are only taking out the old players. It’s not like that.”

End of the road
Sundowns have sported one of the larger squads in the league over the past few years, with several players struggling for game time throughout their spell at the club.
These include Lucky Mohomi who – in four years at the club – has managed a little over 50 appearances in all competitions, along with Aubrey Ngoma, who has nine league appearances in three seasons at Sundowns.
Another player who has struggled to break into the starting XI is Bafana goalkeeper Reeyad Pieterse, who has managed just five appearances in his two seasons at Chloorkop, where he has been behind fellow internationals Denis Onyango and Kennedy Mweene in the pecking order.
