The PSL title race: All the permutations for the remaining two rounds

Sports Uncategorized

When the PSL resumed in August after a nearly six-month break there were six teams in the title race, now with just two rounds left there are four.

The PSL title race: Outsiders

SuperSport United remain nominally in the PSL title race but they will need all three teams above them on the log to lose their remaining matches to stand any chance of lifting the Premiership trophy.

Kaitano Tembo’s side could have been in a different position were it not for two missed penalties in the 2-1 loss to Orlando Pirates over the weekend.

SuperSport United face Baroka FC on Wednesday 2 September and then round off their season against Cape Town City.

Matsatsantsa need to make up six points on leaders Kaizer Chiefs and second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, and although both lost on Sunday, it is hard to envision the title landing anywhere but Naturena or Chloorkop.

The PSL title race: Going out with a bang

Bidvest Wits mugged Kaizer Chiefs in their 1-0 win on Sunday and kept themselves in with an outside chance of giving the club an enormous farewell.

Like SuperSport Wits need Chiefs and Sundowns to make a brace of slip ups although they only have four points to make up which means they could claim the title with two wins if the top two draw in both their remaining matches. With the least goals of any side in the top five Wits will likely need to win both their remaining matches to lift the trophy.

The PSL title race: Deja vu all over again

Mamelodi Sundowns find themselves in a familiar position even if their 1-0 defeat to lowly Baroka FC dented Pitso Mosimane’s trademark confidence.

The Brazilians are chasing a tenth PSL title and the all-time record for top division wins which they currently share with Kaizer Chiefs.

They spurned an opportunity to go top and put some distance between themselves and Chiefs with a toothless display in Dobsonville.

The steel of previous seasons appears absent, but Kaizer Chiefs haven’t exactly stamped their authority on the campaign since the restart. Sundowns experience could be vital.

Sundowns finish their campaign with a brace of matches against relegation-threatened Limpopo sides.

The PSL title race: The great pretenders

The wheels have come off of Kaizer Chiefs campaign but somehow the chassis appears to be scraping its way to the finish line.

Ernst Middendorp knows that his side are two wins away from the title and that must now be the focus for his side who have squandered a ten-point lead and registered just one win since the restart.

Successive 1-0 defeats to title rivals have left them teetering and wounded but somehow still top.

Chiefs must rectify their recent goal drought if they are to end the Amakhosi faithful’s long wait for silverware.

Their run-in may be a tricky one with Chippa United able to seal their place in the PSL if they can overcome Chiefs on Wednesday and final day opponents Baroka FC not yet safe from the drop.
