Watch: IPL highlights – SA’s Lungi Ngidi concedes 27 runs off just two balls

Sports

Oh no. Oh no, oh no, oh no. This truly was the stuff of nightmares for South African paceman Lungi Ngidi. The fast-bowler has recorded one of the worst final overs in cricket’s Indian Premier League (IPL) history, during his latest run-out for the Chennai Super Kings. He was on the receiving end of an epic batting salvo from Jofra Archer, but the Proteas international will only have himself to blame when he watches the highlights back…

IPL highlights for Rajasthan Royals vs Chennai Super Kings

Before Lungi Ngidi came into bowl the last over, the Royals looked unlikely to get past the 200-mark. Six legitimate balls later, and they were – somewhat improbably – sat on 216-7. Here’s how the horror show played out. It’s at this point we advise sensitive viewers to look away now. It’s a bloodbath…

IPL latest scores for Tuesday 22 September

Jofra Archer, an international fixture for England in all formats of the game, was brutal in his approach. He launched one ball out of the stadium while swiping another high into the stands. Another two maximums took the tail-ender to 28* off just eight balls, finishing with a strike rate of 337.5. It’s a shame it had to happen to one of our guys, but this was some vintage IPL – with crowds being the only thing missing from this spectacular assault.

In total, Ngidi was bludgeoned for 30 runs at the end. He finished with bowling figures of 1-56, narrowly avoiding the worst ever bowling figures recorded in the IPL by a Chennai Super Kings player (Piyush Chawla went for 0-57 in 2019).

The South African’s blushes were spared further, as the most expensive over in IPL history still belongs to Chris Gayle – he conceded 37 off a disastrous six-ball spell back in 2011. But nonetheless, this was far from Lungi Ngidi’s finest hour.
