JOHANNESBURG – Fraud and corruption suspect, Angelo Agrizzi, has been rushed to hospital after his first night in prison.
His bail application was dismissed by the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Wednesday after the State argued that he was a flight risk.
Agrizzi was charged yesterday in relation to alleged payments to former ANC Member of Parliament, Vincent Smith, amounting to R800,000 by Bosasa.
Agrizzi’s lawyer, Advocate Mannie Witz, has told Eyewitness News that his client was not trying to pull a “Schabir Shaik” move on the justice system.
Shaik was convicted of corruption but is spending most of his sentence free after claiming to have a grave medical condition.
Witz said that he tried his best to stress to the court yesterday that Agrizzi’s medical condition was too serious for him to be sent to prison.
He explained that his client was permanently on oxygen as he had pre-existing medical conditions which would be worsened by prison.
The court dismissed Agrizzi’s application on the basis that he failed to disclose his financial assets, including monies deposited to offshore accounts.
He has already filed an appeal of his bail application dismissal.
