Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns: Last time out

Sports

The 2020/21 season kicks off on a high note with Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns renewing rivalries at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

In what is undoubtedly the pick of the opening weekend’s PSL fixtures, it is the hosts who have the most to prove after having the title snatched from their grasp last season.

Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns: Last time out

Just as it is the case for Saturday’s fixture, Kaizer Chiefs were at home the last time these two teams met, albeit on unfamiliar territory at Orlando Stadium.

The match was characterised by a number of missed chances, with the hosts the guilty party on most occasions.

Mamelodi Sundowns only needed one goal to walk away victors, and it was provided by Gaston Sirino, who was set up nicely by Themba Zwane with a well-weighted back heel.

The result could be seen by many as the turning point in the league title, as the Brazilians gained significant ground in the race, which culminated in embarrassment for Amakhosi right on the final hour.

Since 1985, the two sides – both celebrating their 50th year in 2020 – have met a total of 70 times.

In this period, Chiefs have the slight upper hand in the fixture, winning 28 league games to Sundowns’ 22, with the rest ending in a draw.

At home, Amakhosi have been significantly dominant, clinching 17 victories in 35 matches, while the Brazilians have only enjoyed victory just six times on the Glamour Boys’ turf.

The last of the Tshwane giants’ wins away from home came when the two sides last met, as they returned the favour, having been beaten on their own backyard in the reverse fixture.

Saturday’s match will kick-off at 15:30 (SAST) and will stream live on the PSL channel on Supersport (202).
