The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has announced the suspension of three runners found to have cheated in the 2019 edition of the race.
The three unnamed athletes were found to have either supplied false entry information and/or having used another athlete to run their qualifying race.
The CMA has declared the athletes’ 2019 results null and void and will impose a two to five-year ban, depending on the transgression.
The 2019 Comrades was won by South Africans Edward Mothibi and Gerda Steyn.
This year’s Comrades Marathon was cancelled due to Covid-19, but at this stage at least, the 2021 edition is due to go ahead on Sunday, June 13.
The 2021 race – which will be the 95th running – with be a ‘Down Run’, starting at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall and finishing at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium.
