Struggling Maritzburg United have parted ways with head coach Eric Tinkler.
The former Orlando Pirates mentor and Bafana Bafana star has been fired after a string of poor results this season that has seen the Team of Choice pick up zero points after four DStv Premiership matches.
Tinkler’s side also bowed out of the MTN8 tournament prior to the start of the current season after losing to Kaizer Chiefs in the quarter-finals.
According to a source close to Maritzburg, Tinkler met with the club management on Monday morning where both parties agreed to go their separate ways.
“Eric Tinkler is no longer coach at Maritzburg United. The club will make an announcement soon,” the source told KickOff.com.
After saving the club from relegation at the end of the 2018/19 season, Tinkler managed to transfrom the side into a much-improved outfit in the 2019/20 season where they finished seventh in the PSL standings.
Tinkler’s final match at the helm was Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Black Leopards. The team are next in action at home to SuperSport United on Friday, November 27.
Tinkler’s final overall record read: played 57, won 23, drew 13, lost 21.
Tinkler played 45 matches for Bafana Bafana between 1994 and 2002. He was part of the South Africa squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
