Contrasting fortunes for losers Kaizer Chiefs and winners Mamelodi Sundowns

Sports

While last season’s runners-up Kaizer Chiefs lost again, last season’s champions Mamelodi Sundowns continued on their merry way in their 2020/21 DStv Premiership campaign.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS STAYED TOP OF THE LOG

Mamelodi Sundowns maintained top spot in the standings with a 2-0 win over TS Galaxy on Tuesday at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

Both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns appointed new coaches for this season after Ernst Middendorp (Chiefs) and Pitso Mosimane (Sundowns) departed.

For their replacements, Gavin Hunt and Steve Komphela, respectively, their time at the helm couldn’t have begun in more contrasting fashion.

While Chiefs lost 2-1 to SuperSport United on Tuesday to remain in 12th place in the standings, Sundowns’ victory over TS Galaxy saw them pick up their fifth win (along with two draws) in their seven matches to date.

By contrast, Chiefs have only six points to show for their efforts (one win, three draws and three defeats).

There is already a yawning 11-point gap between the two sides.

CHIEFS RELEGATION ZONE DANGER

Chiefs are in danger of dropping into the relegation zone as three of the four teams below them have at least one game in hand over Amakhosi. In Bloemfontein Celtic’s case, they have played two fewer matches.

And it’s the dangerous Siwelele who Chiefs will next face in the DStv Premiership at FNB Stadium on Saturday, December 19 in their final league match of the year.

Kick-off is at 18:00.

The Brazilians will also be in league action for the final time in 2020 on Saturday, December 19 against Golden Arrows (15:30).

Don’t bet against them extending their lead atop the log.
