Gibbs, who spent the last few weeks in Sri Lanka as coach of Lanka Premier League side, Colombo Kings, resigned over the weekend and immediately departed for South Africa.
Gibbs confirmed on social media that his mother was in hospital for Covid-19 reasons and that his brother had also been hospitalised, while his sister was recovering from the coronavirus.
GIBBS: YOU TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE STRONG
Sadly, Gibbs’ mother passed away on Monday.
Gibbs once again took to social media to confirm her passing, writing: Finally your suffering has come to an end. A better place awaits where you can be at peace and suffer no more. You taught me how to be strong through everything I’ve faced and I’ll be even stronger now that you’ve passed! You’ll always be with me and in my heart forever! Love love you mommy
GIBBS ONE OF SA’S FINEST EVER SPORTSMEN
Educated at Bishops in Cape Town, Gibbs is without question one of South Africa’s most naturally gifted sportsmen of all time.
Equally adept on the rugby and soccer fields, Gibbs elected to pursue a career in cricket – to the benefit of the Proteas and the gratitude of their supporters.
All told, Gibbs played 90 Tests, 248 ODIs and 23 T20Is for his country between 1996 and 2010.
Gibbs, now 46, was an exceptional fielder and in 2007 became the first batsman to hit six sixes in an ODI over against the Netherlands at the World Cup in the West Indies.
The South African would like to express its sincere condolences to the Gibbs family.
