McCarthy, who has been out of a job since leaving Cape Town City FC a year ago, had applied for a job at Scottish side Hearts, but the club opted for another candidate on the shortlist.
McCarthy has however emerged as the favourite to take over at AmaZulu after new owner Sandile Zungu mentioned an imminent coaching change.
Fueling speculation, on Monday of this week Ayanda Dlamini officially stepped down as head coach of Usuthu.
MCCARTHY COULD BE UNVEILED EARLY NEXT WEEK
Although at least three other coaches have been linked to the vacant role – Eric Tinkler, Shaun Bartlett and Owen da Gama – according to Soccer Laduma reports, McCarthy has all but won the race for the job.
McCarthy is expected to arrive back in South Africa in the coming days as Zungu has expressed a desire to announce the new coach ahead of their next DStv Premiership clash against Golden Arrows on Wednesday, December 16.
AmaZulu are currently in 11th-place in the standings after six matches, with one win, three draws and two defeats.
McCarthy played 80 matches for Bafana, scoring a record 31 goals for the national side.
