PSL heavyweights learn their CAFCL and CAFCC fate

South Africa could still potentially have four PSL clubs flying the nation’s flag during the 2020/2021 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup group stages with Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Bloemfontein Celtic featuring in the second qualification round.

Both Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates were exempted from participating in the first qualifying round while Kaizer Chiefs and Bloemfontein Celtic both successfully proceeded to join their fellow PSL side’s in the second qualification round.

Kaizer Chiefs defeated Cameroonian Champions PWD Bamenda courtesy of a 1-0 on aggregate victory while Bloemfontein Celtic came away with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over DR Congo’s Maniema United following a 2-2 on aggregate draw.

PSL clubs learn intercontinental fate

Mamelodi Sundowns will face Botswana Premiership side Jwaneng Galaxy FC in the final qualification round. The winner from the double-legged clash will book their place in the CAF Champions League group stages.

Kaizer Chiefs next turn their attention to Angolan giants Premiero De Agosto for a place in the CAF Champions League group stages. A victory for the Amakhosi will see them featuring in the CAF Champions League group stages.

Orlando Pirates are due to face Angolan outfit Sagrada in CAF Confederations Cup final qualification round, Sagrada defeated Mbabane Swallows in the opening round. A victory for the PSL giants will earn them a place in the third and final CAF Confederations Cup qualifying round.

Bloemfontein Celtic next gear up to face Nigerian outfit Rivers United. Their opponents finished the 2019/20 Nigerian top flight campaign in third place. A victory for the PSL side will earn them a place in the third and final CAF Confederations Cup qualifying round.

The second qualification round first leg clashes are set to take place between 22 and 23 December while the second leg clashes will take place between 5 and 6 January 2021.
