While the value of DStv Premiership footballers may pale in comparison to their contemporaries playing in Europe, there are several who earn – and can command – multi-million rand PSL salaries.

Dean Boyle takes a look below at the FIVE players with the highest transfer market value in South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL):

Khama Billiat – €1.5 million (R28 million)

The 30-year-old Zimbabwean international and Kaizer Chiefs #11 striker is the most valuable player in the PSL. This is astonishing given that he was a free transfer from Mamelodi Sundowns to Amakhosi in the 2018/19 season. Nobody can deny his quality in attack. He has fast feet and was a prolific finisher in his days at Sundowns where he Player of the 2015/16 PSL Season. “Jika My” has struggled for form recently though, with a solo goal in nine matches in the PSL and none in four CAF Champions League starts. He is currently scheduled to be on the sidelines for the next two months with a cracked leg bone.

Themba Zwane- €1.3 million (R24 million)

Themba Zwane is South Africa’s most valuable player in the PSL. The 31-year-old Sundowns #18 and left winger is in fantastic form having scored 8 goals and provided 1 assist in nine starts for the Brazilians this season. This form validates “Mshishi” being South Africa’s most valuable player. He has not featured for Sundowns in the CAF Champions League yet.

Thulani Hlatshwayo – €1.2 million (R22 Million)

The Orlando Pirates centre-back is the defender with the highest transfer value in the PSL. He has played for the likes of Ajax Cape Town, Bidvest Wits and more recently, the Buccaneers. Standing 1.91m tall, he is a solid force at the back, dominating aerial contests and cutting off passes while winning countless clean tackles. He is a workhorse with many years of experience and a strong physical presence.

Ronwen Williams – €1.1 million (R20 million)

SuperSport United’s shot-stopper and Bafana Bafana’s first-choice goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams, is the highest valued goalkeeper in the PSL. He has earned this right through his razor-sharp reflexes in goal as well as his fantastic positioning and distribution. He uses his six-foot height to its fullest, making the goals feel that much smaller for opponents.

Teboho Mokoena – €1.1 million (R20 million)

Teboho Mokoena is youngest player on this list at just 23 years of age. He has earned the nickname “Mbaza” – meaning “The Axe” – because of his tough tackling skills. He is renowned for his sheer physicality, being gritty and determined defensively. Mokoena is a player who takes no prisoners on attack. He is a nightmare for forwards and midfielders as he does not give an inch of breathing space and always gives 100 percent.
