Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt was left furious with side’s defence in their humiliating 3-0 loss against Mamelodi Sundowns in the their first DStv Premiership match of the season.
Kaizer Chiefs were handed a proper footballing lesson on a blistering hot Saturday afternoon at the FNB Stadium in a DStv Premiership debut they’d want to forget against rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.
Goals by marquee signings Peter Shalulile and Kermit Erasmus along with a penalty by PSL Foootballer of the Season Themba Zwane meant Mamelodi Sundowns romped to an incredible victory over their closest challengers from last season and Gavin Hunt believes this was exactly the difference on the day, marquee signings.
Hunt left furious with the Kaizer Chiefs defence
While admitting his side showed promise in certain areas of the game, Kaizer Chiefs head coach Gavin Hunt was left furious with his side’s defence and vowed to unleash his wrath on them following some schoolboy defending at the FNB Stadium.
“I did think we created some good opportunities at times, but as I said defensively wise it left a lot to be desired.” Hunt told SuperSport TV following the game.
“There’s a lot I want to say but I rather leave it for behind closed doors. It’s not really I want to say I know but it is what is. We have to knuckle down and see what we got and take it from there,”
We suffering from the transfer ban – Hunt
Kaizer Chiefs were unable to complete any signings ahead of their first league clash due to an ongoing court case regarding a transfer ban while their rivals have notably beefed up their squads with some quality signings.
“We know where the problems are, we know the problems from day one. But it is what it is but we ended up with six academy boys on the field so you got to start building, you got to start somewhere.” – Hunt added.
“You’re playing against a team that’s invested very heavily in their squad as you can see their bench, so we were up against it. So we have to dust ourselves off and go again.”
Five sub rule won’t benefit Kaizer Chiefs
“It will help the teams with better squads of players that’s for sure, but that’s not an excuse at all.”
Gavin Hunt and Kaizer Chiefs next turn their attention to Chippa United who they face on Tuesday evening at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
