Bulls prop handed 1-week ban for red card

Bulls prop Jacques van Rooyen has received a one-week ban for his red card offence during their Currie Cup victory over Western Province last Saturday.

RED CARD CAUSED CONTROVERSY

Van Rooyen appeared in front of a SA Rugby disciplinary hearing on Tuesday for his late tackle on WP fullback Warrick Gelant.

While the card caused controversy, the disciplinary committee deemed it to be an “entry level” offence and a one-week ban – instead of the normal two week ban – was handed down.

Referee on the day, AJ Jacobs, was part of the hearing, and a separate referees meeting dealt with the way the incident was handled with TMO Rasta Rasivhenge.

Rasivhenge caused confusion when he first said a yellow card was his recommendation, but then changed his mind to red after Jacobs’ questioning.

As a result of his ban, Van Rooyen will not face the Cheetahs in Round 2 of the tournament in Pretoria this weekend.

Gerhard Steenekamp is his likely replacement if Lizo Gqoboka isn’t fit for selection.

Kick-off is at 16:30.
