Glasgow Rangers’ newly-signed South African midfielder Bongani Zungu will have to wait a bit longer before he can turn up in the Scottish Premier League.

The Bafana star joined Steven Gerrard’s side on transfer deadline day on loan from French outfit Amiens SC.

Bongani Zungu ruled out of Old Firm game

With the league’s biggest fixture taking place on Saturday, many would have expected the player to at least feature on the bench on the day.

However, all indications are that Zungu will not even be able to watch the Old Firm derby from Celtic Park.

According to Gerrard, the 28-year-old is under 10-day isolation, having recently arrived in the country from France.

“Bongani Zungu is currently in quarantine so we sadly won’t see him for another 10 days or so. We have sorted him with gym equipment so he can train from home,” the Liverpool legend said at a press conference on Friday.

Midfield strength

Gerrard has some injuries to worry about, with centre-forward Kemar Roofe among the walking wounded, along with Joe Aribo, who operates from the centre of the midfield, where Zungu would have provided much-needed cover.

Other than that, the former England midfielder is pleased with how some of his squad members fared during the international break.

“I wasn’t surprised to see our players do so well in the International break. We have four great midfielders in form and then we have Zungu to add which we are looking forward to,” Gerrard said.

Rangers currently top the standings in the SPL with eight wins in 10, while Celtic are a mere point behind after playing just nine games.
