Namibian winger Deon Hotto says making the move from Bidvest Wits to Orlando Pirates was not the toughest decision to make.

The 29-year-old was, together with his skipper at the now-defunct Johannesburg club, unveiled by the Soweto giants as their first signings ahead of the upcoming season.

Speaking to the official Pirates website, Hotto said he was honoured to be part of the Buccaneers.

“Yah, for me Orlando Pirates is a great team and as a boy growing up in Namibia it was the biggest club I knew in South Africa,” he said.

“Choosing Pirates for me was an easy decision. This is a club that always competes at the highest level and it is also a club which has a rich history.”

Having starred for his country in last year’s Afcon tournament in Egypt, the former Bloemfontein Celtic man will eye a spot in the Pirates squad that will compete in continental club competition at the start of the new season.

Big-game player

With over 20 assists across competitions in the past two seasons, he also holds a reputation of delivering the goods in big games.

Hotto says he always goes into such fixtures looking to prove that he is just as good as the players in so-called “top teams”, and is looking to carry that mentality into his new club.

“I always have this mentality when I play and it will not change now that I am at Pirates. Every game that I play, I make sure that I put in 110% effort. It’s just who I am.”

Hotto provided a goal and an assist for Wits when they beat Pirates 4-3 in a league encounter in Durban, and was again on the money when the two sides met again in a Nedbank Cup first-round clash at Orlando Stadium.

He has assured the Buccaneers faithful that he will push himself and his teammates to give their best at all times.

“I am now one of them so we can count on each other to take this club forward.”
