JOHANNESBURG – Former African National Congress MP Vincent Smith has been granted bail of R30,000 in the Palm Ridge Magistrates court.

Smith is facing charges of fraud and corruption related to state capture.

He appeared before the Zondo Commission earlier this year where he was questioned about the R800,000 which he received from Bosasa.

Smith started his day at the Alberton Police Station, where he handed himself over to the Hawks.

He then made a short appearance at the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court, where he applied for bail.

His lawyers submitted that he was not a flight risk and would not interfere with any of the witnesses.

They also argued that it was not in the interest of justice to keep Smith behind bars, to which the judge agreed.

The State did not oppose bail, saying that there was no reason for Smith to be behind bars pending his trial.

He is expected back in court on 14 October.
