Super Eagles attacking midfielder and Everton Winger Alex Iwobi has tested positive to COVID-19.

Iwobi is likely to miss the remainder of Nigeria’s AFCON 20201 qualifier, which comes up on Wednesday against Lesotho.

The pacey winger was expected to start against Benin Republic on Saturday but could not join the line up due to the Covid-19 positive test result.

The question many are asking is whether the 24 years old midfielder contracted the virus while in England or upon arrival to Nigeria.

However, the former Arsenal youngster has been withdrawn from the team and further tests are carried out to ascertain and confirm the initial result.

Before the Super Eagles game, every player was subjected to Covid-19 test and upon arrival at Porto Novo on Friday, they were tested as well.

Iwobi was not the only player tested to Covid-19, two of the Squirrels of Benin, Rodrigue Kossi and Jacques Bessan were also left out of the starting IX against Nigeria due to the virus.

Nigeria are through to the tournament scheduled to be held in January next year. But the Squirrel of Benin will be hoping to join other teams who have qualified for the continental showpiece when they face Sierra Leone.

A win or draw will see the Benin Republic players featuring in Cameroon next year.
