Kaizer Chiefs have had an easier programme, says Mosimane

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane says Kaizer Chiefs have had the easier programme between the two PSL title-chasers.

The two giants of South African football go into the final round of fixtures of the season locked on 59 points, with Amakhosi on top of the log standings by virtue of a superior goal difference.

Mamelodi Sundowns look to snatch the title

A clinical performance against the relegation-threatened Black Leopards is required from the Tshwane giants, along with favour from Baroka in the parallel fixture against Amakhosi.

Should such happen, it would mean Sundowns clinch an unprecedented tenth league title in the PSL era.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Mosimane said even beating Leopards does not guarantee them the championship.

“We look back and say, yeah, I look at the boys. I said they’ve given their best, you know because I think Chiefs had an easier programme and they know it’s true.

“You know, they played on Sunday, then they waited to play again on Sunday, even now in the bubble, they’re playing after five days. We were playing for three days. You know, the only maximum rest that we had in between the games was three days. Otherwise, there’s been two days.

“It has been tough. But because we had an ambitious team, because we want more, because we feel we deserve more and we fight for more. That’s it. You know, we have come far. We fought for this title.”

Pitso Mosimane chases history

Clinching the league title will not only be a milestone for Sundowns, but also for the man at the helm, who has guided the club to four league championships.

The former Bafana mentor is tied in that regard with three other PSL coaches, including two former ‘Downs coaches in Ted Dumitru and Gordon Igesund – who also won it with Manning Rangers, Santos and Orlando Pirates. The other one to pull off the feat is Bidvest Wits’ coach Gavin Hunt, who clinched a hattrick of wins with Supersport United before handing the Clever Boys their maiden league title.

Mosimane could follow Hunt in cracking three titles back-to-back, having guided Sundowns to two wins on the bounce in the last two years.

All PSL matches scheduled for Saturday kick off at 15:30 (SAST).
