English club Harlequins have named former Sharks, Lions and Springbok lock Stephan Lewies as captain ahead of the 2020/21 Premiership season.

Lewies played one Test for the Springboks

Lewies follows in the footsteps of former club skippers Keith Wood, Will Carling, Jason Leonard, Andre Vos and Chris Robshaw.

Lewies, 28, played his one and only Test for the Springboks in a 55-6 victory over Scotland in 2014.

He also played 63 Super Rugby matches for the Sharks and 13 for the Lions.

“It’s a massive opportunity – a huge honour,” said Lewies.

“It comes with big responsibility but it’s something special and I’m really excited. Never in my wildest dreams when I signed did I think I’d be in this position.
