The Premier Soccer League (PSL) has rejected Mamelodi Sundowns’ fixture postponement request in light of the death of defender Motjeka Madisha.
South Africa, and more so Mamelodi Sundowns, was left reeling in shock after the sudden passing of Bafana Bafana defender Motjeka Madisha in a motor vehicle accident on Sunday morning.
Mamelodi Sundowns have been rocked with a second death at the club in the space of three weeks however the circumstances surrounding Madisha’s death makes the traumatic situation all the more unbearable.
The defending league champions are yet to release a full statement on the death of their star defender due to the sensitive nature of the case at hand. Despite the traumatic event, Mamelodi Sundowns will now be expected to take to the field of play tonight after the PSL rejected their request to postpone their match against TS Galaxy.
PSL reject mourning Mamelodi Sundowns request
Mamelodi Sundowns are scheduled to meet TS Galaxy in a DStv Premiership clash later this evening, just two days after losing star defender Motjeka Madisha in a highly traumatic incident.
Despite the club’s efforts to have the match postponed, the PSL have stated that a postponement will not take place due to ‘short notice’.
“This season the fact of an incredibly congested fixture due to the impact of COVID-19, means there are even greater pressures on maintaining the fixture. Fixture changes that are not essential will place the completion of the season at risk,” a letter of response to Mamelodi Sundowns from the PSL read as quoted by SoccerLaduma.
“Even where there are exceptional reasons the notice period is there to ensure the League is able to engage all other affected parties, hear their views, and ensure that arrangements that hey have already made are impacted as little as possible. It is simply not possible, on such short notice, to properly consider the application let alone process it. Again, please accept my condolences, but unfortunately the League is not able to postpone the fixture.”
The PSL successfully granted postponements for similar cases in the past however as things stand, bizarrely, Mamelodi Sundowns will now be forced to take to the field tonight when they host TS Galaxy at Loftus Versfeld.
